EUROPE 70 YEARS
AFTER THE MOLOTOV-RIBBENTROP PACT
Conference in the
European Parliament in Brussels
October 14, 2009
organized by the Baltic States under the auspices of the President of the
European Parliament Jersy Buzek, with participation of the Swedish
Presidency of the European Union
The year 2009 marks two important events: the 20th anniversary of the democratic changes in Central And Eastern Europe and the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact.
On 23 August 1939, Germany and the Soviet Union concluded a Non Aggession Treaty, accompanied by a secret protocol, according to which the states of Northern and Eastern Europe was divided into German and Soviet "spheres of influence". In 1988-1990, liberation movements and democratic
changes in
Central and Eastern Europe created preconditions for the reunification of Europe.
